Gansu, circa 1920

This brightly decorated, painted sideboard is from Gansu province. It has been restored but still shows the old paintings set with traditional red lacquer borders and thick, black frames. Storage units like this were produced in Gansu to hold grain or other foodstuffs, made from pine wood and painted with floral designs or depictions of valued possessions. Here the old paintings are faded, but still visible, showing lillies and peony flowers in soft pinks - a symbol of high rank and nobility. The doors have been added more recently by converting what were once fixed panels. When the cabinet was produced the interior would have been accessed solely through the removable boards in the top, which unusually have been left loose. This is a lovely piece, with contrasting colours that would brighten up any space.
